Jr. - 10 year old Police Horse
|
The Providence (RI) Police Department's mounted unit is made up, almost
entirely, of draft cross horses. Inspector Luis DelRio, director of the unit, took
some time last week to talk with DCBOA about the program in Providence.
According to Inspector DelRio, the unit converted to draft crosses about 8 years
ago.
Once they started working with draft crosses, they were sold on several
qualities they found unique to the breed.
The top of the list was the disposition inherited from the draft parent. "Their
calm attitude lends itself to police work", stated DelRio. He went on to praise
the crosses for their ability to go against their flight instinct when faced with
unusual situations.
He also pointed out that they take to training more quickly than other horses.
Mounted police work means long hours on hard pavement. The bone density of
draft crosses allows them to hold up better for this demanding work.
Jr. and his partner, Officer Harold Zacks, are in the business of helping others,
but now they need some help. Jr. needs a sponsor.
To sponsor Jr. an individual or organization pays a one time fee of $3,000, which
entitles them to naming rights of the horse. This $3,000 goes towards the
purchase of the next horse needed by the unit.
